Cardiology: A Practical Handbook 1st Edition

    by David Laflamme (Author)

There has been an exponential increase in the amount of information available on the pathophysiology and management of heart diseases. Meanwhile, understanding of the underlying pathology and physiology has deepened and broadened with new methodologies to monitor cardiac structure and function. These developments have led to an overwhelming amount of information available to students, trainees, and physicians. What is in short supply is a comprehensive yet concise and clear description of the important cardiac conditions and disorders, an approach to their management, and an easily consulted and well-indexed summary to be used at the bedside or in the clinic. This book addresses that need.

Test Yourself Revision: MCQs in Cardiothoracic Surgery - Sample SBA and EMI questions - Basic Sciences, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery

    by Arjuna Weerasinghe (Author)

The book is meant for self revision on topics related to the heart and great vessels as well as the lungs and chest wall. Questions on the basic sciences include developmental abnormalities, normal anatomy and physiology, microbiology and pharmacology. Clinical questions include those related to managing conditions affecting the heart and lungs and mostly relate to the inter phase between medical and surgical management and their definitive surgical management.

The book gives insight into the way diseases of the heart, lung and chest wall are managed from a surgical perspective and may provide useful insight into the surgical management of these conditions to non-surgeon allied professional. It is certainly a useful study companion for the surgeon in training, especially those interested in cardiac or thoracic surgery. Whilst the specialist trainee in cardiothoracic surgery will be great beneficiary general trainees will find useful topics on which revision questions are based. The basic sciences section may even be useful for junior doctors and medical students.

The structure of the questions has been designed as mainly the multiple choice type as the author feels that they are more useful as an aide to revision. The last two chapters are in the form of 'Single Best Answer' type and 'Extended Matching Item' type questions for readers to familiarise themselves with these type of questions.

Single Best Answer Questions in Cardiothoracic Surgery

by Shahzad G Raja BSc. MBBS (Hons) MRCS FRCS(C-Th) (Author)

This first edition of "Single Best Answer Questions in Cardiothoracic Surgery" provides a comprehensive revision aid to the candidates taking the specialty examination in Cardiothoracic Surgery world-wide. This new revision aid provides over 300 single best answer practice questions in Cardiothoracic Surgery and conforms to the recent changes in the format of specialty examinations in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Each question has been carefully formulated to cover an important topic in cardiothoracic surgery. The questions cover the complete specialty examination syllabus and a considerable number of these have been based on previous examination questions. This book contains a substantial number of patient-based questions or clinical vignettes that will enable prospective candidates to test their ability to integrate key basic science concepts with relevant clinical problems. In addition factual recall questions have also been included that probe for basic recall of facts. Detailed and comprehensive explanations, rather than just brief answers, to questions have been provided so that the candidates do not have to consult textbooks for clarification as is the case with most other MCQs books currently available in the market. A list of relevant references is provided at the end of each answer to enable candidates to read the most up to date journal articles on the subject. The questions in this book can be used in a number of ways: (1) as a diagnostic tool (pretest), (2) as a guide and focus for further study, and (3) for self-assessment. The least effective use of these questions is to "study" them by reading them one at a time, and then looking at the correct response. These over 300 practice questions are intended to be an integral part of a well-planned review as well as an isolated resource. If used appropriately, these questions can provide self- assessment information beyond a numeric score. Furthermore, the questions have been planned in such a way that this book can be used as companion to any textbook of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Clinical Cases in Coronary Rotational Atherectomy: Complex Cases and Complications

by Reginald Low (Editor), Khung Keong Yeo (Editor)

This concise practical guide is designed to facilitate the clinical decision-making process in the management of rotational atherectomy procedures by reviewing a number of cases and defining the various diagnostic and management decisions open to clinicians. It will be well illustrated but concise, enabling the reader to obtain relevant information regarding both standard and unusual cases in a rapid, easy to digest format. Each case will also include a narrative description and patient management tips.

Rotational atherectomy (‘rotablator’) is used to treat heavily calcified lesions within coronary arteries at the time of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Lesions that are inadequately treated may not be dilatable by balloons; and stents that are implanted in such lesions are at high risk for acute stent thrombosis and stent failure. However, rotablator therapy is high risk and present unique challenges to the interventionalists. Complications are generally uncommon. However, when they do occur, they tend to be disastrous.

In this case book, we present a series of rotablator cases: basic, complex cases, difficult cases, complications and unusual situations. Although PCI operators all have some degree of experience with this therapy, each operator is unlikely to have significant experience given the cost of the device and the risk involved. Therefore, this book will provide interventionalists with a valuable compendium of cases which can help them in the management of patients whom they plan to treat with rotational atherectomy.
