    Frozen Section Library: Breast

    250 500

    Frozen Section Library: Breast

    by Syed K. Mohsin (Author)

The Frozen Section Library series provides concise, user-friendly, site specific handbooks that are well illustrated and highlight the pitfalls, artifacts and differential diagnosis issues that arise in the hurried frozen section scenario.

Frozen Section Library: Breast provides an easy reference and pocket book about the nuances of adequately handling breast specimens in a fashion that meets the increasingly complex environment of breast pathology. The pros and cons of frozen section versus use of touch imprint as well as related quality assurance requirements are addressed. Other less common uses of intraoperative evaluation, such as diagnosis and margin evaluation are described. The volume includes recommended guidelines for evaluation and documentation of specific gross pathologic features, in conjunction with radiological imaging. Techniques and protocols for such examinations are illustrated. The volume closes with an overview of the newly published guidelines for handling a variety of breast specimens, which are intended to be used for assessment of predictive factors.

Syed K. Mohsin, M.D. is the Head of Breast Pathology and Medical Director, Immunohistochemistry, Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, OH

Forensic Pathology Reviews (Forensic Pathology Reviews, 1)

    by Michael Tsokos (Author)

A collection of cutting-edge reviews of many of the key recent medical and legal advances in forensic science. These critical surveys concentrate on common pathological entities likely to be encountered in daily forensic routine, as well as on specific pathological conditions rarely seen in the autopsy room. Complementing rather than replacing the classic textbooks in forensic pathology, the authors explore new avenues for analyzing the pathology of burned bodies, traumatic brain injury, death by drug abuse, sudden cardiac death, sudden infant death and neonaticide, and fatalities resulting from kicking and trampling. Other areas of interest include accidental autoerotic deaths, hypothermia fatalities, injuries from resuscitation procedures, the interpretation of alcohol levels in different specimens, and the potential forensic differential diagnoses and interpretation of iliopsoas muscle hemorrhage in the light of autopsy.

Fluid Physiology and Pathology in Traditional Chinese Medicine 2nd Edition

by Steven Clavey BA DipAdv Acupuncture (Author)

This book covers in clear and comprehensive detail the area of fluid physiology, metabolism and disorders in Traditional Chinese Medicine, drawing on a huge range of original Chinese material. Disorders of sweating and urination, the formation of thin mucus, damp and phlegm, and the interaction of these with other pathological factors are discussed, and the classical sources quoted. Differentiations and treatments, both Classical and modern, including both herbs and acupuncture, are provided in all categories, with case histories where appropriate and interesting. The new edition includes a new chapter on acupuncture, new illustrations, a full index, and revisions throughout. A complete index provides reference to specific disorders, concepts, formulas, and points. A new chapter on Acupuncture Methods in Fluid Pathology details acupuncture treatments for specific disorders of fluid metabolism. New case histories illustrate theoretical concepts and demonstrate their use in the clinic, as well as assist in developing a sense of prognosis and occasionally an alternative approach to a difficult case. An in-depth description of the Traditional Chinese Medicine concept of body fluid physiology and pathology conveys an essential understanding of fluid disorders and their role in every patient's clinical presentation, which may be the key to an otherwise uncertain or difficult case. Both Chinese herbal treatments and acupuncture methodologies are described for each fluid disorder, bringing theory into practical use. Chapter on acupuncture New illustrations Full index (current edition does not have an index!) Revisions throughout where appropriate

Endoscopic Biopsy Interpretation: A Practical Guide

by M. Priyanthi Kumarasinghe (Editor), Ian Brown (Editor)

The volume of endoscopic biopsies being performed continues to grow rapidly and they now represent one of the most common specimens encountered in routine surgical pathology practice. It is essential to maintain the balance between the speed and accuracy while integrating emerging sophisticated pathology techniques into endoscopic biopsies in routine practice. Microscopic appearance is virtually diagnostic of certain diseases. In others a diagnosis may be rendered only after correlating the microscopic pattern with clinical clues aided by ancillary tests. This text provides a guide to systematic approach of endoscopic biopsies to render a safe, quick and accurate pathological diagnosis in an integrated manner as well as important information that pathologists and clinicians should know to get the best value of endoscopic biopsies. The first chapter introduces the key microscopic features that are normal and abnormal in the gut mucosa as appreciated in an endoscopic biopsy. The second chapter presents a general overview highlighting the neoplastic and non- neoplastic patterns that are common to the entire tubular gut. Because some patterns are common to many sites, an overarching chapter gives the reader a generalized approach, which will be further refined in subsequent site specific chapters. The disease etiologies of each pattern are discussed, with emphasis placed on the most common causes that will be encountered in clinical practice. The subsequent chapters that follow then concentrate on patterns encountered at specific anatomical locations. Under each anatomical location (esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine) site specific patterns of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions are described. Conditions that affect many sites in the gastrointestinal tract are discussed in detail in the most relevant site chapter, but are referred to in other chapters as the reaction pattern/s they produce at that site is discussed. Ancillary tests that are required for a diagnosis of some diseases in particular neoplastic conditions are listed with tips for interpretation. This is presented mostly in a table format to assist day-to-day quick reference. In keeping with recent advances of using small biopsies for testing clinically relevant bio markers, important information that the pathologists and clinicians need to know is highlighted in appropriate sites. Authored by experts in the field, each chapter is presented under headings that include diagnostic features, patterns with relevant endoscopic and clinical clues, traps and overlapping features, and appropriate ancillary tests including clinically relevant molecular signatures in endoscopic biopsies.

Diagnosing Social Pathology: Rousseau, Hegel, Marx, and Durkheim New Edition

    by Frederick Neuhouser (Author)

Can a human society suffer from illness like a living thing? And if so, how does such a malaise manifest itself? In this thought-provoking book, Fred Neuhouser explains and defends the idea of social pathology, demonstrating what it means to describe societies as 'ill', or 'sick', and why we are so often drawn to conceiving of social problems as ailments or maladies. He shows how Rousseau, Hegel, Marx, and Durkheim – four key philosophers who are seldom taken to constitute a 'tradition' – deploy the idea of social pathology in comparable ways, and then explores the connections between societal illnesses and the phenomena those thinkers made famous: alienation, anomie, ideology, and social dysfunction. His book is a rich and compelling illumination of both the idea of social disease and the importance it has had, and continues to have, for philosophical views of society.
