Clinical Guidelines in Urological Management (Recent Advances in Endourology, 4)

by S. Ohshima (Editor), Y. Hirao (Editor)

The twenty-first century will be the era of the market economy, a century char acterized by the penetration of market forces into every social field, even into government activities, education, and medical care. Guidelines for the provision of clinical care have been developed in recent years chiefly in American health-care services, which are the most thoroughly exposed to the market economy. The problem of escalating medical costs in the United States led the government and consumer groups to introduce clinical practice guidelines. Guidelines were introduced to control medical costs and quality. Initially, guidelines were developed mainly on the consumer side, but professionals, too, soon recognized the importance of clinical practice guidelines. The involvement of diverse groups in the development of guidelines has inten sified the need to create and improve scientific methods for drawing up those guidelines. Owing to the development of systematic and structured abstraction methods, evidence-based guidelines have been proposed. Principally, guidelines are a sum mary of published treatments created by statistical analysis of clinical outcomes.

Clinical Problems in Pediatric Urology 1st Edition

by Prasad P. Godbole (Editor), John P. Gearhart (Editor), Duncan T. Wilcox (Editor)

Pediatric Urology has established itself as a separate subspeciality and is an essential component of the Intercollegiate exams both in Pediatric Surgery (FRCS Paeds) and Adult Urology (FRCS Urol) and the Board exams in the USA. Exposure to Pediatric Urology training is often limited to only one year in most Pediatric surgical training programmes; and is practically non-existent in Adult urology training programmes. There are several Pediatric Urology textbooks providing factual information and literature reviews; however, problem based learning has be shown to be much more useful than the search and scan approach.

This book covers all the major topics in Pediatric Urology in a "problem solving" format and using numerous illustrations. Most of the information is evidence-based and all problems are representative of those actually encountered in clinical practice.

The contributing authors have key affiliations with societies such as the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons, the British Association of Paediatric Urologists and the European Association of Paediatric Urologists.

    Clinical Urology Illustrated

    750 1,500

     Clinical Urology Illustrated

    by R.B. Brown (Author)

In this precise and authoritative urological text Mr Ronald Brown and his associates have scored two firsts. In its emphasis throughout on the im portance of clinical assessment, history taking and physical examination, together with its wealth of illustrations, it offers a' unique view of genitourinary medicine; and it is the first clinical urology text to be written by an Australian. The authors' approach to their subject is ideal for students and physicians confronted with patients with genitourinary problems. The text is concise, the references valuable and the index comprehensive. I was particularly in terested in the chapter on Paediatric Urology with its admirably succinct of hypospadias, but the outstanding feature of the whole book discussion is the line drawings and illustrative x-rays, not only excellent in themselves but in their presentation: the clear uncrowded layout making it easy for the reader to consult the appropriate illustration nearby, and where helpful there has been no hesitation in using the same diagram in several different places. If my students know everything that's in this book they will know more than most urologists. It is especially gratifying to me to see this fine book emanate from Australia and to know that four of the authors have had their stimulus to excellence in work here at UCLA.

    Combination Therapy in Urological Malignancy

by Philip H. (ed) SMITH (Author)

Any discussion of the present success in management of urological cancers evokes a mixed response. Oncologists and urologists can enjoy the success with chemotherapy for testicular cancers but cannot forget the dismal results with any form of treatment, other than surgery, for renal carcinoma. But these are the less frequent urolegi cal what are the attitudes to the more common prostate and bladder cancers. Intensive study, many clinical trials and much debate lead us to the conclusion that we understand them better, we can tailor the treatment more appropriately to the individual patient but there remains some uncertainty as to the overall success that we have achieved. There have been no striking changes in the 5-year survival data. Clinicians tend to see their success in terms of their special interest. Radiotherapists point to their success in stage-reduction but what are we to do with the many patients whose tumour is unaltered by radiotherapy. Urological surgeons, and especially those who are still influenced by the shadow of Halsted, point to their success in excising the cancer but apart from that highly selected group, what are we to do for the very large number of patients for whom surgery is inappro priate. Bystanders can only watch and listen to the arguments for and against these views.

Complementary & Alternative Medicine for Prostate and Urologic Health

    by Mark A. Moyad (Author)

Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) for Prostate/Urologic Health is designed to capture and clinically review the comprehensive database of clinical research articles that support and do not support the utilization of a variety of dietary supplements and other complementary medicines that physicians are exposed to in their daily practice. This is a critical distinction between this book and any other CAM

Complementary & Alternative Medicine for Prostate and Urologic Health is designed to capture and clinically review the comprehensive database of clinical research articles that support and do not support the utilization of a variety of dietary supplements and other complementary medicines that physicians are exposed to in their daily practice. This is a critical distinction between this book and any other Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) books published to date. Each section of the book provides an easy to reference guide into the topic of interest for the individual that works in urology. The various sub-specialty groups in urology are adequately represented, which allows for a physician to rapidly and thoroughly investigate their topic of interest regardless of whether it is fertility, bladder cancer, or prostate disease. Rather than having to sort through the now thousands of articles published yearly on CAM in medicine, this volume focuses first on the specialty and secondarily how it compares to the overall CAM literature. Each chapter includes a summary page that will allow the physician a rapid review of the subject with a patient, colleague or student.

The practical nature of this book in urology also cannot be overstated. Chapters include a general overview of the CAM agent, whether or not it has data in medicine and urology, and a list of potential drug interactions and specific clinical scenarios where it can be utilized or discouraged in the specialty. Complementary & Alternative Medicine for Prostate and Urologic Health represents a gold standard text for use in teaching, not only for the students interested in the urologic field but for all current urologic health providers.

Controversies and Innovations in Urological Surgery (Clinical Practice in Urology)1st ed by J. Clive Gingell (Editor), Paul H. Abrams (Editor) The title of this book is a challenge. Anyone with the least knowledge of present day urology will know that there are many very controversial aspects of this subject. Urology is not alone in this unsettled environment for there are similar debates in almost all other aspects of surgery. In addition to the rapid changes in technology, an important part of the explanation for these controversies is simply that more surgeons are prepared to admit that no area of their work is so established that it does not bear further scrutiny and assessment. Argument can be tedious but debate is healthy. This book aims to present material that is debatable: experienced practitioners of each topic explain why an opinion or preference can be sustained. The purist might wish to have these opinions resolved by a well-planned clinical trial, but experience of clinical trials shows that they do not always produce results that are easily translated into a positive change in clinical practice. Would the reader be persuaded more by a statistically significant difference or by an experienced clinician who has reached certain conclusions? Both are risky, but since surgical techniques are often not easily converted into appropriate studies or trials the Editors have obtained the best opinion on each controversy and innovation. The media adore controversy for its own sake. The medical profession accepts controversy but knows that few events in medicine are absolute and few procedures can be done only by one method. Emergency Urology 1st Edition

by Dr David Thurtle BMedSci BMBS MRCS (Editor), Dr Suzanne Biers BSc MBBS MD FRCS (Urol) (Editor), Dr Michal Sut Lek Med MMedSci FRCS (Urol) (Editor), Dr James Armitage BSc MBBS MD FRCS (Urol) (Editor)

Urology is a specialty that notoriously receives little attention in medical school, yet it makes up a sizeable portion of the workload in emergency departments and also in primary care. Urological emergencies can often be managed simply but require the appropriate knowledge and skills. Emergency urology is often covered very superficially alongside general surgery or in excessive detail within voluminous urology textbooks.

This book is different: it consists of concise, well-structured chapters, with an accessible and easily digestible style. The content is clinically-based and includes a number of clinical photographs and radiological investigations.

This book will appeal to all doctors, including those rotating through surgical and emergency medicine specialties, and those clinicians approaching professional examinations worldwide. Medical students on urology or emergency medicine placements, who are studying for their exams will also find it invaluable. In addition, primary care doctors, specialty nurses in urology and nurses in the emergency department may also appreciate the clinically relevant content of the book.

The authors are all dedicated to education and teaching, and have published extensively. In addition, they run a successful emergency urology course in Cambridge, popular with clinicians and senior students alike.

Essentials of Paediatric Urology 2nd Edition

by David F. M. Thomas (Editor), Patrick G. Duffy (Editor), Anthony M. K. Rickwood (Editor)

This excellent and superbly illustrated text provides surgical trainees and non specialists with an updated and extensively revised account of the urological disorders of childhood . The second edition reflects the many advances and innovations in paediatric urology since the first edition was published in 2002 and incorporates suggestions and feedback from readers and reviewers of the first edition of Essentials of Paediatric Urology. There are new chapters on "The Child as Patient" that highlights the important differences in the approach to caring for children and adults, and provides clarification on legal and ethical issues concerning consent; and, minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery, reflecting the innovative advances in effective patient care; and a new multiple choice question chapter with cross-references to the text, as requested by many readers of the first edition, thus providing an aide-memoire for those undergoing speciality examinations.

This popular text was never intended to duplicate the large reference books written primarily for specialists. Instead it fulfils a unique role as the only textbook of paediatric urology written primarily for trainees and those practising adult urology, paediatric surgery and paediatric urology . The second edition continues to meet this need as well as providing a ready source of reference for non-specialists including paediatricians and nurses.

Like the first edition, the new edition is accessible and concise with a visual format characterized by extensive use of colour illustrations, flow charts and diagrams.
