Endoscopic Biopsy Interpretation: A Practical Guide

by M. Priyanthi Kumarasinghe (Editor), Ian Brown (Editor)

The volume of endoscopic biopsies being performed continues to grow rapidly and they now represent one of the most common specimens encountered in routine surgical pathology practice. It is essential to maintain the balance between the speed and accuracy while integrating emerging sophisticated pathology techniques into endoscopic biopsies in routine practice. Microscopic appearance is virtually diagnostic of certain diseases. In others a diagnosis may be rendered only after correlating the microscopic pattern with clinical clues aided by ancillary tests. This text provides a guide to systematic approach of endoscopic biopsies to render a safe, quick and accurate pathological diagnosis in an integrated manner as well as important information that pathologists and clinicians should know to get the best value of endoscopic biopsies. The first chapter introduces the key microscopic features that are normal and abnormal in the gut mucosa as appreciated in an endoscopic biopsy. The second chapter presents a general overview highlighting the neoplastic and non- neoplastic patterns that are common to the entire tubular gut. Because some patterns are common to many sites, an overarching chapter gives the reader a generalized approach, which will be further refined in subsequent site specific chapters. The disease etiologies of each pattern are discussed, with emphasis placed on the most common causes that will be encountered in clinical practice. The subsequent chapters that follow then concentrate on patterns encountered at specific anatomical locations. Under each anatomical location (esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine) site specific patterns of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions are described. Conditions that affect many sites in the gastrointestinal tract are discussed in detail in the most relevant site chapter, but are referred to in other chapters as the reaction pattern/s they produce at that site is discussed. Ancillary tests that are required for a diagnosis of some diseases in particular neoplastic conditions are listed with tips for interpretation. This is presented mostly in a table format to assist day-to-day quick reference. In keeping with recent advances of using small biopsies for testing clinically relevant bio markers, important information that the pathologists and clinicians need to know is highlighted in appropriate sites. Authored by experts in the field, each chapter is presented under headings that include diagnostic features, patterns with relevant endoscopic and clinical clues, traps and overlapping features, and appropriate ancillary tests including clinically relevant molecular signatures in endoscopic biopsies.

100 Cases in Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine 2nd Edition

by Eamon Shamil (Editor), Praful Ravi (Editor), Ashish Chandra (Editor)

A 77-year-old man phones ‘999’ after experiencing severe backache. The paramedics arrive to find him in severe pain, and cold and clammy. While at his house, they note that he smokes and also elicit a history of hypertension. He is tachycardic and hypotensive en route to hospital, and intravenous fluids are started. You have been assigned his initial assessment ...

100 Cases in Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine presents 100 clinical scenarios commonly seen by medical students and junior doctors in the emergency department, outpatient clinic, operating theatre or in general practice. A succinct summary of the patient's history, examination and initial investigations is followed by questions on each case, with particular emphasis on the interpretation of the results and in which an understanding of the underlying clinical pathology is central to arriving at the correct diagnosis. The answer includes a detailed discussion on each topic, providing an essential revision aid as well as a practical guide for students and junior doctors, especially those preparing for undergraduate and postgraduate examinations.

Making speedy and appropriate clinical decisions, and choosing the best course of action to take as a result, is one of the most important and challenging parts of training to become a doctor. Fully revised and updated for this second edition, these true-to-life cases will teach students and junior doctors to recognize important clinical conditions, to request the appropriate pathological investigation and correctly interpret those results, and, as a result, to develop their diagnostic and management skills.

Understanding Cancer: The Molecular Mechanisms, Biology, Pathology and Clinical Implications of Malignant Neoplasia English Edition by David Tarin (著) This book provides a unique, wide-ranging description of the phenomenon of cancer and its pathological effects in diverse species including humans, domesticated and wild animals, invertebrates, and plants. The broad scope of information presented is used to construct radical new insights into biological self-regulation and explain their relevance to its disruption by cancerous growth and spread within the human body. Mechanisms of action of carcinogenic agents, initiation, progression, metastasis, inappropriate gene expression, dormancy, latency, regression, and reasons for susceptibility and/or resistance to cancer are all considered. Also discussed are criteria for pathological diagnosis, advances in treatment, implications for public health, and pitfalls in diagnosis and interpretation of experimental results. The book describes operational mechanisms of cancer at the levels of whole individual, organ, tissue, cell, molecular, and even atomic (quantum) scales of structural and physiological order. Evidence is assembled from all these levels of organization to show that cancer is a dynamically changing disorder and that it is an inherent and perpetual risk of multicellular composition. This provides pragmatic new biological and clinical perspectives on malignant neoplasia. The biological insight is that it is a consequence of progressing miscommunication within a cellular society. The clinical perspective is realistic but optimistic in reasoning that, although cancer can never be completely eradicated from human life, because it is a disorder of our intrinsic biological constitution, it can be controlled and ameliorated and even cured in a proportion of individuals. The text is profusely illustrated with over 300 macroscopic and microscopic pictures. It will stimulate curiosity and interest specialists, as well as beginners, in many scientific disciplines and provides copious references to the medical and scientific literature supporting its conclusions. Readers from fields as diverse as medicine, pathology, veterinary sciences, cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, and epidemiology will find the information the book contains thought-provoking, interesting, and useful. Additionally, specialists in occupational and environmental health and legal experts focusing on exposure to carcinogenic materials and pollution will find the contents valuable and informative. Pathology of the Head and Neck

by Antonio Cardesa (Editor), Pieter Slootweg (Editor)

Head and neck pathology is increasingly becoming an attractive field for the new generations of pathologists, fully aware that in the era of specialization the information contained in the treatise of general surgical pathology, although extremely valuable to create the basis of their knowledge, does not provide in its full picture the specific knowledge required to meet current diagnostic and prognostic requirements. The book Pathology of the Head and Neck presents in a single volume the most pertinent and updated information needed by the interested readers. Its contents have been divided into ten chapters. The first one covers the spectrum of precursor and neoplastic lesions of the squamous epithelium. It is followed by chapters devoted to nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, maxillofacial skeleton and teeth, salivary glands, nasopharynx and Waldeyer`s ring, larynx and hypopharynx, ear and temporal bone, neck and neck dissection, as well as eye and ocular adnexa. The authors of the different chapters have been selected among internationally recognized experts, all of them members of the Working Group on Head and Neck Pathology of the European Society of Pathology.

The Practice of Surgical Pathology: A Beginner's Guide to the Diagnostic Process

    by Diana Weedman Molavi (Author)

In pathology education within North America, there exists a wide gap in the pedagogy between medical school and residency. Unlike other medical disciplines, in which the skills of history- taking, physical examination, and assessment are nurtured from the first year of medical school, the practice of pathology bears little resemblance to the visual gallery of pattern recognition that is second-year medical school pathology. Few medical schools have required clinical rotations in pathology, and many electives remain limited in scope and participation. The pathology intern often comes into residency painfully unprepared.

The Practice of Surgical Pathology: A Beginner’s Guide to the Diagnostic Process lays the foundation of practical pathology and provides a scaffold on which to build a knowledge base. It includes basic introductory material and progresses through each organ system. Within each chapter, there is a brief review of salient normal histology, a discussion of typicalspecimen types, a strategic approach to the specimen with a list of what to look for, and a discussion of how the multitude of different diagnoses relate to each other.

Diagnosing Social Pathology: Rousseau, Hegel, Marx, and Durkheim New Edition

    by Frederick Neuhouser (Author)

Can a human society suffer from illness like a living thing? And if so, how does such a malaise manifest itself? In this thought-provoking book, Fred Neuhouser explains and defends the idea of social pathology, demonstrating what it means to describe societies as 'ill', or 'sick', and why we are so often drawn to conceiving of social problems as ailments or maladies. He shows how Rousseau, Hegel, Marx, and Durkheim – four key philosophers who are seldom taken to constitute a 'tradition' – deploy the idea of social pathology in comparable ways, and then explores the connections between societal illnesses and the phenomena those thinkers made famous: alienation, anomie, ideology, and social dysfunction. His book is a rich and compelling illumination of both the idea of social disease and the importance it has had, and continues to have, for philosophical views of society.

The availability of all human genes and their locations is exciting, but their mechanisms of action and interaction with other genes are often unknown. Certain variations in the environment and characteristics of human genes make it difficult for scientists to maximize their efforts to take advantage of this new fund of knowledge. The high degree of similarity between mouse and human genomes and physiology has made mice the laboratory animals of choice in the search for models of human disease. In recent years significant advances in our ability to examine the mouse eye and to view vascular and neural structures in vivo has led to a marked increase in interest in mouse ocular pathology and development.

Besides providing much new information, Systematic Evaluation of the Mouse Eye: Anatomy, Pathology, and Biomethods provides investigators with a resource that summarizes the widely scattered information on mouse eye anatomy, development, and pathology. It describes the normal anatomy, pre- and postnatal development, regional pathology, and methodology for evaluation of the mouse eye and adnexae. The first section covers the principal features of mouse eye anatomy and development. The second part discusses issues in evaluation of mutations in mice, including background ocular disease, control selection, quantitative traits, and ENU mutagenesis. With this background in place, the book then reviews and illustrates regional ocular pathology and correlates it with human eye disease.

Many of the contributors who have helped develop and refine the specialized techniques necessary for the examination and preparation of mouse eye tissue for microscopy provide "how-to" chapters. These chapters cover methods for necropsy, photography, histopathology, confocal microscopy, intraocular pressure measurement, and electroretinography. Systematic Evaluation of the Mouse Eye: Anatomy, Pathology, and Biomethods provides the first comprehensive and systematic guide to understanding the development, structure, and abnormal pathology of the mouse eye so you can make the most of your genetic research.

WHO Classification of Skin Tumours 4th Edition

by WHO Classification of Tumours Editorial Board (Editor), D. Massi (Editor), R. Scolyer (Editor), R. Willemze (Editor)

The WHO Classification of Skin Tumours is the 11th volume in the 4th edition of the WHO series on the classification of human tumors. The series (also known as the Blue Books) has long been regarded by pathologists as the gold standard for the diagnosis of tumors, and it is an indispensable guide for the design of evaluations, clinical trials, and studies involving cancer. These authoritative and concise reference books provide an international standard for anyone involved in cancer research or the care of cancer patients. Diagnostic criteria, pathological features, and genetic and other associated molecular alterations are described in a disease-oriented manner.

This volume updates the existing ICD-O codes and provides new codes for use in epidemiology and cancer registration. It also provides information on clinical features, pathology, genetics, prognosis, and protective factors for each of the tumor types covered.

The editors expect that this volume will be of particular interest to pathologists, oncologists, and dermatologists who manage or research skin tumors. Sections are included on all recognized neoplasms (and their variants) of the skin and its adnexae. Since the previous edition, there have been particularly substantial changes to the classification of melanoma, based on the latest information from genetic and molecular studies.

    Molecular Pathology Protocols

    Molecular Pathology Protocols

    by Anthony A. Killeen (Editor)

The era of molecular pathology has arrived. From its promising beg- nings in research laboratories, the field has grown, and continues to grow, to become a vital part of the care of an ever-increasing number of patients. Because of its recent emergence from the research taboratory, many molecuIar pathology protocols we still to be found in the primary litcramre, and have not appeared in a text. MO~PCU~Q~ Padhoiogy Protocob contains la- ratory protocoIs that have been developed by many of the authors for use in clinical molecular pathology laboratories and describe in detail Row to perform these assays. This book is therefore intended for clinical laboratory use by medical technologists and pathologists. It will dso be of interest to research workers who are performing these assays. In its broadest meaning, pathology is the study of disease, and therefore it follows that any disease for which the molecular basis is understood would be suitable as a topic for inclusion in this work. When seiecting protocols, it was necessary to place limits on the number of chapters that could be feasibly presented in a single work. Those protoculs that were selected are performed more frequently, or have achieved recognition as having important diagnostic utility in contemporary practice. A decision was made to exclude inherited genetic diseases with certain exceptions, such as those diseases that are associated with thrombotic states and are part of the traditional dumain of pathology.
