Obstetric Ultrasound: Artistry in Practice 1st Edition

    by John C. Hobbins (Author)

This evidence-based book shows how to use ultrasound to identify potential problems and how best to manage them. Working backwards from the fetal finding or maternal problem, this practical resource explores potential diagnostic routes and management plans. Throughout the book, the author uses ‘case in point’ examples to focus on how to extract the most useful information from a standard ultrasound examination. Dr. Hobbins, who has spent more than three decades using ultrasound in a perinatal setting, also thoroughly explores vital issues such as comprehensive examination of the fetal anatomy, the meaning of various abnormal findings, how ultrasound can be used to enhance the management of obstetrical complications, dealing with discrepant biometry, diabetes and hypertension, advanced maternal age, preterm labor, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and safety of ultrasound.

    Obstetric Dermatology: A Practical Guide

by Arieh Ingber (Author), Mark Lebwohl (Foreword)

There are many changes in the skin, hair, and nails during and after pregnancy. Patients are certainly aware that those changes are occurring, but few physicians and even fewer patients know how to predict the course of those changes. Pigmentary changes occur, but are they permanent? Can they be prevented or reversed? Hair may become thicker during pregnancy, only to fall out in the postpartum period. When will hair stop falling out? Will it grow back? What hormonal changes are occurring to produce these effects on the skin, hair, and nails? Will those hormonal changes affect other organs? Some cutaneous manifestations of pregnancy are common and recognized by most physicians. Abdominal striae, for example, are easily identified, but physicians have many questions about them. Why do they develop? Can they be prevented or treated? Other cutaneous manifestations of pregnancy are less common and recognized by few. For example, pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy is a debilitating condition that is treatable once diagnosed. Even more important than the treatment, the knowledge imparted to a worried mother that her child will be fine and that the condition is se- limited is priceless; but the condition must first be recognized by the patient’s physician. All of these questions and conditions are addressed in this extraordinary book. Pigm- tary disorders are addressed in detail in Chap. 2.

Anesthetic and Obstetric Management of High-Risk Pregnancy 3rd ed

    by Sanjay Datta (Editor)

It has been enormously satisfying to prepare the third edition of Anesthetic and Obstetric Management of High-Risk Pregnancy because it fulfills the need for close communication between two specialties, anesthesiology and obstetrics. This relationship is necessary not only to take care of the sick parturient, but also to deliver a healthy baby. New developments in obstetrics and in obstetric anesthesia necessitated this third edition. Most of the contributors to this edition are new, and they have provided information on the latest approaches, as well as updated information. In addition, Chapter 13, “Critical Care Anesthesia for High-Risk Parturients,” is completely new. Like earlier editions, the third edition includes contributions from an international team of experts in the field of obstetric anesthesia and obstetrics. I thank all the authors for their va- able contributions. The authors have expressed their own opinions and recommendations, which do not necessarily reflect my own views. I also wish to thank Ms. Elizabeth Kiernan for her endless help in completing the new edition. I sincerely hope this edition will further reinforce the concept of the team approach for taking care of the high-risk parturient.

We have representatives from nine countries - Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Norway, Sweden and UK. It is appropriate that this Symposium on Cervagem be held in South-east Asia where so much excellent development work was done with this product. Cervagem has resulted from many years of collaborative research and development between May & Baker and the Ono Pharmaceutical Company of Japan. It has been a most happy collaboration from the time the active ingredient ONO-802 was synthesized by the Ono Company. You will hear today of the stage we have reached with the R&D work."

Prostaglandins and their Inhibitors in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology

by M. Bygdeman (Editor), G. Berger (Editor), L.G. Keith (Editor)

It is clear today that several prostaglandins play an important role in the regulation of many of the physiological events of the reproductive organs in the human. Both naturally occurring prostaglandins and their analogues are used routinely in many countries to ripen the cervix and induce labour at term as well as to dilate the cervix and to terminate pregnancy. Prostaglandin biosynthesis inhibitors are widely used in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhoea. The editors have aimed at an accurate, thorough, yet easily under standable review of the status in 1986 of medical knowledge regarding both the physiological importance and the clinical use of prostaglan dins and their inhibitors in obstetrics and gynaecology. I believe this book will be of value for all clinicians concerned with reproductive health. The list of authors guarantees an authoritative and up-to-date review of this active field. The Management of the Menopause & Post-Menopausal Years

    by S. Campbell (Editor)

Despite the fact that the average woman spends one third of her life after the menopause, medical research has been devoted almost entirely to the repro ductive period of her life span. This is perhaps not surprising in our youth orientated society and yet there is increasing evidence that properly applied and supervised hormonal therapy could alleviate many of the severe physical symptoms which are associated with the ovarian menopause and that in the long term other aspects of physical deterioration could be modified. This lack of scientific research has made it difficult to assess which symptoms are due to the altered hormonal status of the post-menopausal period and which are due to the normal process of ageing, or the various psychological pressures which build up around most women in the fourth and fifth decades of life. In America doctors have been treating the 'menopausal syndrome' with estrogens for over 30 years, but in the United Kingdom gynaecologists and family doctors have been reticent to prescribe these steroid preparations. As a consequence, they have been labelled reactionary by the media and while there may be some truth -in this, it should be remembered that the hazar. ds associated with synthetic estrogens in the contraceptive pill were first brought to light by British epidemiological surveys.

    Companion to Gynaecology

    400 850

    Companion to Gynaecology

by C.L.-H. Huang (Author), V.G. Daniels (Author)

This book was written to provide a clear and systematic sum mary of the principles of gynaecology in synoptic form. It is part of a three volume series, the first two volumes covering topics in undergraduate obstetricE! and neonatal medicine respectively. Where appropriate, fundamentals of related anatomy and physiology are also covered. It is primarily directed at under graduate medical students and midwives, but material useful as reference to doctors revising for further qualifications has been included. Although much of the content is organized in the form of lists, this book differs from the usual 'list' book in that cover age is full and systematic. Thus the text has been organized into the following subheadings, where appropriate: Definitions, Aetiology, Pathophysiology, Clinical features, Differential Diag nosis, Investigations, Treatment, and Prognosis. To avoid rep etition, certain clinical areas including ectopic pregnancy and abortion which have been covered in the earlier volumes are not included. Certain useful diagnostic lists are also provided, and, in pre paring the book, previous examination papers of the Univer sities of Oxford, Cambridge and London, as well as of the Central Midwives Board, were consulted. Illustrations have been specially prepared in the form of explanatory line drawings that are simple, and easy to memorize and reproduce. Although drug dosages were checked with care before going to press, changes in medical practice make it advisable to verify regimes and doses with the latest prescribing information and the pharmacopoeia, before use.

Problems in Gynaecology (Problems in Practice)

    by E.P.W. Tatford (Editor)

There is ample opportunity and scope for gynaecology in prim ary care in general practice. Many conditions and problems can be managed successfully in this context without referral to hos pital and specialist care. The first aim of this book is to deal with common problems that are referred for consultant opinion and specialist management to the average District General Hospital by analysing problems of presentation and diagnosis on a symptom-orientated basis. Selection for primary care management as opposed to hospital referral is then considered, following which the wide range of available treatment is evaluated with particular emphasis on the maximum use of up-to-date but proven regimes. The full use of the expertise of the practitioner is highlighted throughout. The second aim is to encourage the practice of primary care gynaecology and to help those doctors who have a special in terest in the subject, while hopefully stimulating others to de velop a similar one. With this in mind, the approach to the problems is realistic and often dogmatic while opportunities for individual management and for practical procedures are kept to the forefront.
